Info=Set in the near future, the film follows Teresa (Bárbara Colen), who comes home to Bacurau, a fictional village in Brazil's semi-arid sertão, to attend her grandmother's funeral. Upon her arrival, Teresa immediately observes signs that Bacurau is in dire straits. Basic amenities are in short supply, mobile-phone coverage is fading, clean water supply is dammed and the truck that brings potable water arrives riddled with bullet holes. It soon becomes apparent that the corrupt government has forsaken the village completely: not only has Bacurau been literally erased from the map, but its citizens are under attack. As the responsible close in, the villagers must prepare an organized resistance to avoid greater damage

Dificilmente eu pagava pra assistir algum filme nacional nos cinemas, pois a maioria que lança é sempre de humor bem sem graça(sempre aqueles que tem o Paulo Gustavo no elenco ou às vezes a Ingrid Guimarães e o Leandro Hassum no elenco. Filmes genéricos e feito somente pra lucrar mesmo. Porém o Bacurau me causou estranheza e curiosidade ao ver o trailer, e decidi assistir no dia da Independência e vestida de preto. Foi a melhor coisa que fiz, e nunca me senti tão orgulhosa no cinema vendo um filme brasileiro e NORDESTINO! O mais foda de tudo é que saí do cinema impressionada pois senti absolutamente tudo quando assisti Vingadores Ultimato, porém eu tava mais feliz ainda pois eu estava assistindo um filme foda que foi feito no meu país. 💖.

Eu assisti só este fds, pois não chegou a entrar nas redes de cinema aqui, mas felizmente há uma sala cult aqui em Jundiaí-SP q me possibilitou ver. Fiquei bastante impactado com o senso de comunidade do povo sofrido de Bacurau (refletindo uma realidade de inúmeras comunidades abandonadas no Brasil) e também com a cena q achei brilhante da excitação dos 2 americanos q imediatamente após matarem 2 pessoas de maneira brutal, com uma chuva de balas desnecessária, começam a transar logo na sequência, retratando como há um fetiche mesmo no belicismo extremo q esses grupos promovem. E realmente a cena dos gringos desdenhando dos babacas pau mandados é muito marcante e mostra uma realidade atual muito triste.
Just viewed Bacurau at the Mill Valley Film Festival and found it incredibly hard to sit through. Clocking in at 2 hours and 10 minutes it was often tedious for me to sit through. While slasher king John Carpenter homages prevail here I am not convinced the genre is effective in making a statement about the right wing political environment in Brazil right now. The critics appear to love it though.
If you love dead bodies piling up by the dozens with décapitations, buzzing flies, buckets of blood and some gratuitous sex thrown in for good measure this is the film for you.

Rating: NNN Brazil’s Mendonça Filho follows up his beautiful and scathing 2016 film Aquarius with a political western that mixes bonkers horror conventions with intense formalism. Co-directed with Aquarius production designer Dornelles, it opens with a satellite view of Brazil that zooms in on the country’s sparsely populated northern region – home to the fictional Bacurau. We meet Teresa (Barbara Colen) as she passes an overturned coffin truck while en route to the desert town in a surreal, deadpan and bloody sequence that sets the tone for what’s to come. Not unlike Maya Da-Rin’s Wavelengths film The Fever and Colombian crime drama Birds Of Passage, Bacurau is a sharp reaction to geopolitical inequality with a focus on class and colonialism. The directors take time giving us a sense of place, pace and social mores through rich and evocative wide landscape shots and close-ups of the diverse ensemble cast, which includes Sônia Braga. Gradually, an insidious plot – drawn clearly along the lines of social hierarchy and led by a villain played by (who else? ) Udo Kier – takes over. The parts prove greater than the sum in Bacurau, which ultimately delivers big cheer-worthy moments but doesn’t always pull off its balance of high-brow/low-brow successfully or satisfyingly. There is nothing quite like Bacurau, and that should come off as a ringing endorsement. The surreal western film, now available in virtual screening rooms thanks to Laemmle Theatres and Alamo Drafthouse in Los Angeles, is a violent fable that has a social consciousness about present-day issues in Brazil and around the world. If audience members are willing to get through all the blood splatter (on par with a Quentin Tarantino film), there are immeasurable enjoyments to be had. Bacurau, which gives the movie its title, is a small village in the rural parts of Brazil known as the sertão. The story begins with a beloved matriarch in the community dying and a young woman named Teresa ( Bárbara Colen) returning to the village to bid adieu to her grandmother. Carmelita (Lia de Itamaracá) was the glue that held this small town together, and now with her gone, everything seems to fall apart. Here’s where things start to take a bizarre turn … The residents of Bacurau, while trying to get on with their life after Carmelita’s passing, realize that their town is no longer coming up in Google searches. They seem to be completely wiped off the map. Then there’s a UFO drone recording their every move. Then there are two bikers who speed into town and seem to be lost, or are they? The grand plan of Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, co-writers and co-directors, only starts to take shape when Udo Kier (yes, that Udo Kier) enters the story as a ringleader of a brutal gang of mercenaries who are determined to kill every last resident of Bacurau. Their motives are unclear, but there seems to be a Hungers Games -esque quality to the narrative because after each kill, which is spectacularly violent, the mercenaries rejoice and even receive sexual satisfaction. Underneath this sordid story, there are some profound lessons and social commentaries. Community life is brought into the crosshairs, but it is this community that must band together and fight back against these evil outside influences. There’s a lot to consider in that packed idea, and it all comes to bear in the satirical bloodbath that is Bacurau. One can ask so many interesting questions about these characters. Why are they being targeted? Why is their way of life threatened? Is there anyway for them to survive? What (or who) will be lost in their struggle? Does the guitar-playing local who weaves in and out of scenes have something important to say, or is he a distraction? What is going on? The supporting cast are brilliantly believable in their varied roles. There’s much to appreciate in the performances of Thomas Aquino as Pacote and Sônia Braga as Domingas. They are engaging in their individual characterizations and how they respond to this new threat to their livelihood. Kier is also effective in the maniacal leadership over his team of gun-toting monsters. Bacurau comes off as two movies brought together into one package. Before one understands what’s going on, there’s a quaintness and serenity to the village life. It’s a portrait of small-town Brazil, ripe with quirkiness and humor, but then any positivity is shattered by the invaders, whose motives are never fully articulated. This second half of the film tests the stomach of viewers because the violence is never-ending and never softened. Still, within the carnage, there’s that central message of trying to offer commentary on the world as it stands today and the ongoing threat against community life. One scene perfectly encapsulates this two-pronged narrative approach: A man gardens while completely nude, no doubt an activity he has done several times over. Perhaps unbeknownst to him, there is a mercenary lurking nearby, for some reasons ready to take him out, even though he doesn’t pose a risk at all. Concordo com quase tudo. Bacurau é um ótimo filme, e uma pena que não esteja como nosso representante nas premiações. Só acho que sim, o filme é atual, mas provoca para a possibilidade de uma futuro distopico onde mortes são legalmente permitidas, para além da legítima defesa, além de haver um controle da população através do isolamento e da intervenção medicamentosa. Outra coisa que me chamou a atenção foi a ausência de uma figura bem importante, principalmente nas cidades do interior, deixando atmosfera ainda menos esperançosa, e os moradores com o instinto de sobrevivência nas alturas.
